How to protect, clean and restore suede and nubuck footwear — without water stains or flattened nap.

Suede is leather with the surface sanded to raise a soft nap. That nap is what makes it look luxurious — and what makes it a magnet for water stains, oil and crushed texture. Ordinary cleaning methods that work on smooth leather will ruin suede.
The single most effective thing you can do is apply a suede protector spray before the first wear and re-apply every few weeks. It creates an invisible barrier against water and oil. In Dubai's dusty, occasionally humid conditions, this is non-negotiable for pale suede.
Brush suede with a dedicated suede brush after each wear, always in one direction, to lift the nap and remove dust. For scuffs, a suede eraser (or a clean pencil eraser) rubbed gently restores texture.
Water stains: dampen the whole panel evenly with a spray of water, blot, then brush and let dry — this prevents a tide mark. Oil stains: dust with talcum powder or cornflour, leave overnight to absorb, then brush off. Deep or old stains usually need professional treatment.
If the nap is matted, the colour has faded, or a stain won't lift, a specialist suede and nubuck cleaning service can re-nap, re-colour and re-protect the shoe. Attempting aggressive DIY on expensive suede is the fastest way to a permanent bald patch.
Light water is survivable if you dampen the whole panel evenly and let it dry naturally, but repeated soaking ruins suede. Always use a protector spray.
Lightly mist the entire panel with water, blot, brush the nap in one direction and air-dry. Old or deep stains need professional treatment.
Similar but not identical — nubuck is sanded top-grain leather, slightly more durable. Both need suede-specific brushes and protectors.
