How to Condition Leather Shoes (and How Often)

Why leather cracks

Leather is skin — it needs oils to stay flexible. Heat and air-conditioning both strip moisture, and Dubai delivers plenty of both. Dry leather creases, then those creases crack. Conditioning replaces lost oils before that happens.

How often to condition

For regularly worn leather shoes in Dubai, condition every 4–6 weeks. Formal shoes worn occasionally can go longer, but check for a dull, dry look — that's the cue. Over-conditioning is also possible: too much softens the structure, so apply thin coats.

The routine

Clean off dust first with a damp cloth. Apply a pea-sized amount of leather conditioner or balm with a soft cloth, working it in with circular motions. Let it absorb for 15–20 minutes, then buff off the excess. Finish with polish if you want shine.

Professional conditioning

Premium and exotic leathers, or shoes already showing cracks, benefit from professional deep conditioning that penetrates further than consumer products. It's a small cost that meaningfully extends the life of expensive footwear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I condition leather shoes in Dubai?

Every 4–6 weeks for regularly worn shoes — the heat and air-conditioning dry leather faster here than in cooler climates.

Can you over-condition leather?

Yes. Too much softens the structure and attracts dust. Apply thin coats and buff off the excess.

What's the difference between conditioner and polish?

Conditioner replaces oils to keep leather supple; polish adds colour and shine on top. Condition first, then polish.
