Professional Shoe Colour Restoration

Faded, stained or scratched colour on leather shoes does not mean the end of their life. Professional colour restoration can return shoes to their original shade — or transform them to an entirely new colour. This is both a technical and an artistic process requiring an understanding of leather types, dye chemistry and finishing techniques.

When Colour Restoration Makes Sense

• Sun fading — prolonged UV exposure bleaches leather, common with shoes left near windows or in cars.
• Scuff damage — deep scuffs that have removed the surface colour layer, exposing lighter leather beneath.
• Stains that won't lift — oil, ink or dye-transfer stains permanently discolouring the surface.
• Worn patina — natural colour loss at high-wear points (toe box, heel counter, creases).
• Colour change — transforming a pair from one colour to another (lighter-to-darker is easier; darker-to-lighter needs stripping).

Our Colour Restoration Process

1. Deep cleaning — all existing polish, wax and contaminants are removed so dye can bond properly.
2. Colour stripping (when needed) — for colour changes or heavy build-up, we reach bare leather with controlled strippers.
3. Surface preparation — light deglazing ensures the new colour bonds evenly without patchiness.
4. Colour matching — we mix custom dye blends to match the original precisely, or create the requested new shade.
5. Application — multiple thin coats of professional leather dye, hand-applied for even coverage. Each coat dries fully before the next.
6. Sealant & conditioning — a clear finisher locks in the colour and adds abrasion resistance; conditioning restores suppleness.

What We Can and Cannot Do

We can restore virtually any leather shoe to its original colour with a near-invisible result. Going lighter requires stripping, which works well on smooth leather but may be uneven on heavily textured surfaces. Patent leather cannot be recoloured (the coating rejects dye). Heavily cracked leather takes colour unevenly at crack lines. We provide honest previews of expected outcomes before beginning work.

Maintaining Your Restored Shoes

After colour restoration, maintain the finish with matching cream polish (never wax-only, which builds up and obscures colour). Avoid prolonged sun exposure, and apply a UV-protective conditioner every 2–3 weeks. The restored colour typically lasts 6–12 months of regular wear before needing a touch-up, depending on wear intensity.
