The good news: most discolouration is surface-level and reversible if you act early and use the right method for each material. The mistake most people make is throwing them in the washing machine, which breaks down the glue and warps the sole.
A soft-bristle brush (an old toothbrush works for detail), mild soap or a dedicated sneaker cleaner, microfibre cloths, lukewarm water and a magic eraser for the midsoles. Never use bleach on coloured accents or leather — it yellows over time and weakens fibres.
Remove the laces and brush off loose dust dry first. Mix a few drops of mild soap into lukewarm water, dip the brush, and work in small circles. Blot — don't soak — then wipe with a clean damp cloth. Stuff with white paper towel and air-dry away from direct sun, which can yellow the fabric.
For stubborn grey shadows on canvas, a paste of baking soda and a little water, left for ten minutes then brushed off, lifts most of it.
