Protecting the value of leather, canvas and exotic-skin bags — cleaning, storage and when to go pro.

Designer bags span smooth leather, coated canvas, suede, and exotic skins — each needs a different approach. Using the wrong product on a coated-canvas monogram or an exotic skin can cause irreversible damage and destroy resale value.
Wipe with a soft dry cloth after use. Keep bags off the floor. Avoid overfilling, which distorts shape. Keep pens, make-up and hand cream away from light-coloured interiors.
Coated canvas: wipe with a barely-damp cloth, dry immediately. Smooth leather: a dedicated leather cleaner then conditioner. Suede: brush and use a suede eraser only. Hardware: a soft cloth, never abrasives. Never submerge any bag in water.
Stuff with acid-free paper to hold shape, store in the original dust bag (never plastic), and keep away from heat and direct light which fades and dries leather.
Stains, colour transfer, scuffed corners, a musty smell or hardware tarnish on a valuable bag are jobs for a specialist bag-cleaning service. The cost is trivial next to the bag's value, and professional restoration protects resale.
Light surface care yes, but stains, colour transfer and hardware issues on valuable bags are best left to a specialist to protect resale value.
Stuff with acid-free paper, use the original dust bag (never plastic), and keep away from heat and direct light.
Overfilling, floor contact, direct sun, and using the wrong cleaning products on coated canvas or exotic skins.
