Fine sand works into stitching and abrades material. Extreme heat dries leather and softens sole adhesives. UV fades colour and yellows white rubber. Air-conditioning then dries everything further. It's a uniquely tough environment for footwear.
Brush off sand before it embeds. Wipe shoes down after outdoor wear. Rotate pairs so heat-stressed shoes recover. Never leave shoes in a parked car — interior temperatures can warp soles and crack leather.

Dubai desert sand is primarily quartz, one of the hardest common minerals. Unlike organic urban dirt that sits on surfaces, quartz particles embed in fabric weaves and scratch leather finishes. Each step grinds embedded particles against the material.
Sand accumulates in stitching channels, between the upper and sole, and inside the shoe. Once inside, it abrades lining material with every step, accelerating interior breakdown. The damage is invisible until lining fabric thins and tears.
Leather: heat evaporates natural oils, causing drying and cracking. Dashboard temperatures inside a parked car in Dubai reach 70 to 80 degrees. Leather left on a car floor for an afternoon can dry-crack irreversibly.
Adhesives: most shoe adhesives soften above 60 degrees. Hot pavements in summer can reach 70+ degrees, softening sole bonds from below.
Rubber: heat accelerates oxidation and can cause compounds to become brittle. EVA foam midsoles compress permanently when heated, losing cushioning.
Synthetics: PU coatings peel, vinyl softens and warps, and glued decorative elements detach. Heat damage to synthetics is usually irreversible.
Never leave shoes in your car. Dashboard temperatures destroy shoes in hours. Even the boot reaches 50 to 60 degrees in summer.
Brush shoes immediately after outdoor wear. Sand removed within minutes brushes off cleanly; sand left overnight sets into stitching and becomes much harder to remove.
Apply waterproofing spray every three to four weeks. For leather, condition every four to six weeks to replace heat-extracted oils.
On extremely hot days (45+ degrees), avoid extended walks in premium shoes. The combination of sole-temperature from hot pavement and ambient air pushes adhesives past their tolerances.
Welted construction handles heat better than cemented (glued) construction because stitching does not fail at high temperatures. For daily outdoor wear in summer, prioritise stitched shoes.
Lighter colours reflect more heat than dark ones. A white sole runs measurably cooler on hot pavement than a black sole.
Breathable materials (perforated leather, mesh panels) release heat and moisture faster, reducing internal temperature buildup.
